Johnny Neel & Criminal Element

Johnny has a smoking new band called The Criminal Element that is really on the cutting edge. They can improvise better than most bands could ever hope to. This new sound has given Johnny’s always tasteful melodies a driving energy of their own. Johnny Neel and the Criminal Element have just put out their second release in the past year. The band is not slowing down at all. As a matter of fact their creativity is accelerating due to the synergistic effect of all members pushing forward and contributing to the overall sound. The Volume 2 release has expanded on their Volume 1 release with the same fresh music and street-smart lyrics that made "Johnny Neel & Criminal Element" Volume 1 such a break-through recording.

Late Night Breakfast Reviewed by Connie "Crash" Humiston

Break out the napkins, or you'll get real messy. Here comes Johnny Neel with Late Night Breakfast! And, bring those napkins on down to the Grand Emporium on April 28th to hear this phenomenon live, presented by Dark Horse Productions and with special MC guest Tom "Trashmouth" Baker!

As I was writing this review on New Year's Day, I wondered if it was too early to start my "Top 10 of 2001" CD list. Regardless of Father Time, what is true is true, and what is hip is hip. Not only is Johnny Neel and any recording he puts out first rate, he is one of the most talented musicians to walk the planet. He joins the ranks of multi-talented blind pianists/composers such as Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder - and he's every bit as creative and soulful.

Gun Metal Blue - Wildy's World

Johnny Neel – Gun Metal Blue
2004

Gun Metal Blue opens with "Cross My Mind", which sounds like it might have been penned by Bruce Springsteen at his best. It's an opening salvo from this music industry veteran that could either be the high point of the album or a harbinger of what's to come. In this case it's both. Johnny Neel has created a gem of an album that runs the gamut from straightforward rock to roadhouse blues. At times he'll remind you of Springsteen, Bob Seger and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Gun Metal Blue - MuzikReviews

Johnny Neel made his mark many moons ago in the Allman Brothers Band and his song writing credits range from Delbert McClinton, Cyril Lance, Willie Nelson, Government Mule, and Montgomery Gentry, to mention just a few of his many accomplishments over the years. Well, there is another feather to put in his cap, a new album titled Gun Metal Blue.

I have to say right out of the gate that I loved this album, every single track, so if I gush from here on in, please forgive me. Neel is marvelous on the keys and his vocals have that rough from-the-belly whiskey southern rock flavor, like his former band mate Greg Allman. He sounds like he plays for keeps and his soul goes into each track he records. Neel may be blind in regards to the physical body but his musical vision is as clear and true. He reminds me of great players like Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder that overcame their disabilities to shine brightly in another area of life. Neel has a gift, he can sing and play as few musicians can, and he keeps you under his spell from start to finish on this album. With all of that taken into consideration, it makes this entire project and his career that much more incredible than so many others that tried and failed going down the same path.
